Honors College Application
For Current TU Students
Thank you for your interest in applying to the Towson University Honors College. Please fill out all required fields on this page and click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to complete your application.
This application is for current TU students only. If you are a new first-year student or transferring from another institution, you must apply to the Honors College through the general Towson University application, available at http://www.towson.edu/admissions/undergrad/index.html.
Students who submit this application by November 15, 2022 may choose to apply for the spring 2023 or fall 2023 term. Students who apply after November 15, 2022 and by the March 1, 2023 deadline will be admitted to the Honors College for the fall 2023 term. Per university financial aid policy, current TU students admitted to Honors are not eligible for an Honors College Scholarship.
Applications to the Honors College are assessed on a holistic basis, with the applicant's academic record, record of leadership and service, and clarity of writing and ability to craft and argument all factored in to the decision. For applicants with fewer than 30 completed college credits, the academic record assessment is based on high school and college work, whereas for applicants with 30 or more college credits the academic record assessment is based on college records only. Decisions also will take the applicant's fall 2022 TU GPA into account.
The application deadline for the Honors College for the spring 2023 term is November 15, 2022, and the deadline for the fall 2023 term is March 1, 2023. In order for your application to be received, you must click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. You will receive an email confirmation that your application has been received. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Please indicate whether you will have earned credit for the following courses by the end of the academic term preceding your intended term of entry to the Honors College. If you are applying for spring 2023, this means after the fall 2022 term. If you are applying for fall 2023, this means after the spring 2023 term. Academic credit may be earned at TU or transferred in through other means. *

List of Activities

Reporting activities can help us better understand your life outside the classroom. Examples of activities might include clubs, extracurriculars, family responsibilities, hobbies, work, or volunteering. List your activities in the order of their importance to you.

For each activity, please indicate the following:

Position/leadership; organization name; participation grade levels (including college year); hours per week; weeks per year; and whether it took place during the school year, during break, or all year. Additionally, provide a brief (up to 50 words) description of the activity and your role.


Please upload a 500-750 word essay that answers one of the questions listed below.
Option 1 Current evidence indicates that rising sea levels, combined in some cases with sinking land, will produce chronic inundation in increasing numbers of both urban and rural sites during coming decades and damage fresh water sources. Some urban areas will have very high economic value and substantial resources to support a response. Other areas, especially those more rural, may have few resources and historically disadvantaged populations. Maryland is one of the states in the US projected to be among the most affected. The suggested strategies for response include:
1. Raise taxes to fund substantial projects to build walls, pumping stations, or other infrastructure to try to control rising seas levels and flooding for the most developed and most prosperous areas.
2. Expand and enforce zoning codes and laws to prohibit new development in areas projected to be affected by chronic inundation and prevent replacement of existing structures in those zones.
3. Enact and enforce strict emission controls to dramatically reduce ongoing warming that contributes to the pace of sea level rise.
4. Prepare plans, and create the legal framework, for forced migration to move existing populations away from zones experiencing increased and chronic flooding, including compensation to home or business owners for relocating.
5. Let nature take its course, and let individuals respond. It should not be the responsibility of local or state government to protect individual property or to compensate individuals for flooding.

How should Maryland residents respond to rising seas and chronic inundation? If people and property should receive support for such a response, who should receive it and how will it be funded?

Option 2 In Elan Mastai’s 2017 novel All Our Wrong Todays, the character of scientist Lionel Goettreider postulates the theory of the “Accident”: “[W]hen you invent a new technology, you also invent the accident of that technology. When you invent the car, you invent the car accident. When you invent the plane, you also invent the plane crash. When you invent nuclear fission, you also invent the nuclear meltdown.” Goettreider then argues that an inventor cannot turn on or use a new invention until they identify its accident and figure out how to prevent it.

Identify one emerging or speculative technology of your choice. What is the accident of that technology? Can there be multiple accidents, some direct and some incidental? Is it the responsibility of the technology’s inventors, designers, and promoters to consider the accident of that technology and develop a means of prevention?

Option 3 Over a decade ago, 40 of America's wealthiest individuals signed the Giving Pledge, and made a commitment to give away most of their fortunes to various charities throughout the remainder of their lifetime or upon death. Over 200 billionaires from around the world have followed suit and committed most of their fortunes to philanthropies from research and education to environmental causes. Do the extremely wealthy have a social responsibility to share much of their wealth? What social issues or ethical questions arise if great wealth is handed on to family heirs across multiple generations? Assuming an individual acquired a great fortune legally, what ethical questions are involved in the question of how those resources are ultimately distributed?

Option 4 Choosing a president through a nationwide election in the United States has maintained the dominance of a two-party system in American politics, with each party assembling bodies of voters who may not agree on a full range of issues but who vote together in an effort to elect a compatible candidate or to block an undesired one. Some voters, some political observers, and some scholars have argued that it would be better if the American political system promoted the inclusion of more parties which could put forward candidates representing the specific values and commitments of significant blocks of voters. They imagine, for example, a Congress composed in a political pattern similar to several other industrial states with parties of the right, center right, center left, and left, where no single party gets an absolute majority and thus they must negotiate continually to build majorities in support of new legislation. Would this system make voters more engaged? Would it lead to more effective governing? Why or why not?

Teacher Recommendation (Optional)

Students may have an optional letter of recommendation from a teacher in a major subject area included in their Honors consideration. For some students, letters of recommendation can help us better understand what drives you, explain circumstances which have had a distinct effect on your studies, or otherwise provide a fuller picture of the applicant. Should you choose to request a letter, your letter writer is encouraged to consider the following questions:
1. Does the student show curiosity in reaching beyond what is immediately required or expected?
2. Does the student contribute constructively in groups? Can you provide an example?
3. Would you look forward to having this student in class again? Why or why not?
4. If you could suggest an improvement in this student’s approach to his or her own education, what would it be? 
If you choose to have a letter of recommendation written by someone who is not a major subject instructor, you must explain to us in writing why you have asked that person to write you a letter. Send your explanation, along with your name and the name of your recommender, to honors@towson.edu.
Your letter may be uploaded through the TU application, sent to TU via Naviance, or your recommender may send it directly to admissions@towson.edu.
