Professional Development Opportunities

The City of Syracuse and CenterState CEO with SUNY EOC, OCM BOCES, Onondaga Community College are aligning with local employers to launch a collection of Syracuse Surge job training programs designed to prepare a tech enabled workforce for the New Economy (New Economy means high-tech growth careers).
 
Advanced manufacturing involves the use of automation technology to improve products and/or processes.The industry is growing at a rapid pace and the numbers are expected to continue to rise. Syracuse Surge is now accepting applications for two professional development programs designed to prepare participants for local in-demand careers in high tech growing industries.

Electrical Mechanical Technician: This middle-skilled paid professional development experience co-led by Onondaga Community College and OCM BOCES, includes on-the-job training with employers. Its focus is to prepare skilled workers for careers in mechanical or electrical maintenance servicing large industrial equipment. Candidates should have some knowledge of electrical/mechanical basics(fixing a dryer, lawnmower, car etc.). Wages for these careers start around $18 an hour. These careers have significant opportunities for advancement, steady full time hours, full benefits and retirement.

Surge Advanced Manufacturing: This approximatley three week introductory paid professional development program at SUNY EOC will prepare people for careers in clean high-tech advanced manufacturing. The program covers blueprint reading, industrial math, technical skills, professional development and one-on-one training with local employers. Wages start at around $15 an hour with overtime frequently available. These careers have significant opportunities for advancement, steady full time hours, full benefits and retirement. 
 
Surge Defense: This 13 week paid training at SUNY EOC will prepare people people for careers with Lockheed Martin and other government contracting positions. This intensive coursework is paid, tutition free and covers a national soldering certification, an OSHA 10 certificate, technical math and more. This training program comes with a conditional offer from Lockheed upon final interview, and background passing. Other employers will be connected to the program at the end as well. Entry level wages start at around $23 an hour. These careers have significant opportunities for advancement, steady full time hours, full benefits and retirement.   • 18 years or older
  • City of Syracuse, NY resident for at least one year(or Onondaga County for Surge Defense)
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to attend the full training program 
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English for training and safety purposes
  • High school diploma or equivalent degree (Surge Defense and Electrical Mechanical Technican)
  • Knowledge of electrical/mechanical basics (Electrical Mechanical Technician only)

This program covers:

Blueprint reading, industrial math, technical skills, and professional development for resumes/interview coaching
Introductions and assistance in applying to job openings at Next Gen Power Systems, Blurfors Cryocoolers Inc, ICM Controls and many more.
Entry-level wages start around $15 an hour with overtime frequently available. These careers have significant opportunities for advancement.
People often choose this path who need to ensure they have consistent steady hours and healthcare.
Will have a SUNY Attain Manufacturing Curriuculum Certificate to be added to resume

Entry-level wages for these careers start at approximately $18 an hour.
Will have a stackable badge/microcredential awarded by Credly/OCC

This introductory paid training program will prepare people for careers in clean high-tech advanced manufacturing in high level assembly jobs in government contracting facilites.
Will have JSTD100 National Certification, OSHA 10 and SUNY Completion Certificate

This program covers:
Soldering, government contracting documentation procedures, electrostatic discharge, industrial math, technical skills, professional development and more.
Introductions and assistance in applying to job openings at Lockheed Martin, Sabb and TTM.
Conditional offers will be made from Lockheed Martin, pending program completion, background check and a final interview.
Entry-level wages start around $25 an hour with overtime frequently available. These careers have significant opportunities for advancement.

On December 15th, all participants will interview directly with a selection of employers and then walk the stage at SUNY OCC recital area with a celebration for family after. Candidates must interview with employers. The goal is go from these professional developments directly to employment.

Syracuse Surge training programs prepare participants to apply to job openings at with requirements to sit, stand, move around, lift up to 35 pounds, possibly climb some ladders depending on the job and generally have some physical requirements.
